Raga
The word raga is derived from ranj metal which means to give pleasure.
That's why a beautiful composition of at least five, at most seven Swars (voices),
which gives a feeling of joy on hearing it, is called a raga.
The sages have given the definition of raga in the following way – that
which is decorated with sound, Swars (tone) and Verns (alphabets), which
entertains the mind is called Raga. Playing and listening to raga songs gives a
feeling of different rasas like karun rasa, shringaar rasa, veer rasa, etc.
Rules of Raga: -
(1) It is necessary to have pigmentation in raga.
(2) There should be at least five and maximum seven swaras in a raga.
(3) 'S' is not prohibited in
any raga.
(4) In any raga both 'M' and
'P' are not prohibited together.
(5) In all ragas it is necessary to have Thaat, Vaadi, Samvadi, Jati,
Time, Aroh (Ascent), Avroh, Pakad (Grip).
