Ustad Abdul Karim Khan


Ustad Abdul Karim Khan was born on 11 November 1872 in Village kirana, district Saharanpur. His father's name was Kale Khan. He was taught basic music from his father and his uncle. His forefathers were singers and instrument players. He started singing very well in his childhood. He started singing on stage at the age of 6 years. He became a good singer at the age of 15 and appointed as a singer in the Darbar of Baroda King.
Ustad Abdul Karim Khan became a good singer and his wish was to produce more singers and good singers and instrumentalists. He established the Arya Sangeet Vidyalaya in Pune in 1913 and   opened a branch in Mumbai after some time. The school had to be closed due to some reasons after three years. Because of which you left Mumbai and came to Miraj.
The singing of Khan had a sweet and melodious abode, was based on Meend and Kan. His song 'Thumri  piya bin nahi awat chain' became very famous. He made Thumri simple and popular. He sang very good Khayal, Thumri, Bhajan and Marathi language songs. His voice was very easy with Taar saptak. He used to wear coat and he liked to keep the stick in his hand. He was a peaceful, kind and gentle type of person. That's why there was a lot of compassion and makeup in his voice. Many of his learners became top artists like Heerabhai Bardokar, Swaye Gandharva and Begum Roshanara etc.
Once he had to go from Miraj to Madas and from there to Pondicherry in connection with the programme, but the way he got worse. The journey had to be postponed. It got worse with the passage of time. It is said that on last day, he offered Namaz on the bed and worshiped God in the tunes of Raag Darbari Kanhra and died on October 27, 1937 AD with the last moment singing. He was buried near Khawaja Bhira Saheb.
